Aftercare Instructions

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CIRCUMCISION AFTERCARE

  1. A petroleum coated gauze strip has been wrapped around the tip of the penis several times. If the gauze strip has not fallen off before 24 hours, it needs to be unwrapped and removed.
  2. Whenever a diaper change is performed, place 3x3 sterile gauze pad coated with sterile lubricant over the tip of the penis. Do not use anything other than K-Y Jelly or Vaseline for the lubricant. This should be performed for at least two days following the circumcision or until all the gauze pads have been used up.
  3. Infection is an extremely rare side effect of circumcision. If signs of infection occur such as a bad odor, excessive redness spreading into the groin, pus or abnormal swelling, please call me immediately.
  4. It is normal for the penis to bleed slightly for the first several days. Excessive bleeding is extremely rare, but must be attended to. If you notice excessive bleeding, please feel free to call me immediately.
  5. It is possible for adhesions to develop. Adhesions occur when the skin of the shaft attaches to the head of the penis. If this occurs, attempt to gently push the skin back during diaper changes. If an adhesion persists, please call me to have the baby reevaluated.
  6. As part of the normal healing process, the tip of the penis will be quite red or purple. The area underneath the tip of the penis will look irritated for approximately the first two weeks. This occurs due to the formation of new skin under the tip of the penis. This area can look red or yellow and crusty.
  7. Make an appointment for followup with your family physician or pediatrician within two weeks.
  8. Tub bathing is allowed three days following the circumcision as long as the baby's bellybutton has healed.
  9. Please feel free to give Tylenol Infant Drops 0.4 cc every four hours as needed for pain.
  10. Please do not hesitate to call me if any problems occur or if you have any questions.

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to perform this procedure on your child.
